Greece asks EU to help meet the strong inflow of illegal immigrants.
In the first six years, forty thousand people were detained at the borders of 27.
The overwhelming majority, 3 / 4, came from Greece.
Many come through the Turkish border.
Athens says it is unable to accommodate so many people. The UN condemned the inhuman conditions of detention centers.
In Brussels, a spokesman for the European Commission stressed that "it is the first time that a Member State, in this case Greece, requesting the intervention of rapid intervention teams ( RABIT ) this time at the border between Greece and Turkey. "
Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmstroem, pledged that Greece will benefit from concrete form of European solidarity in the management of external borders.
But Brussels has not yet announced how many European border guards are being sent.
